Week 7: Lianna Pisani: Performative embodiment and the selfie
|
This lecture is entitled: Performative embodiment and the selfie: defining the political feminist selfie. In this lecture, Lianna Pisani shows how selfies are being used as tools of feminist activism to challenge oppressive ideologies towards people who self-identify as women. Drawing on Nancy Baym and Theresa Senft's definition of the selfie as object and gesture or practice, she takes on a series of case studies to show how selfies as performative practice can challenge the power the camera lens has typically has had over the presentation of the female form in visual culture.
